Our Mission

Our mission is to make our students more successful in life through their practice of Uechi karate at our schools. We do this by teaching our karate as a complete discipline (mind, body, spirit) which in addition to developing physical defense, encourages the formation of high personal standards and respect for fellow men and women. Through our practice, teaching, and student service, we strive daily to produce individuals who are positive, respected and contributing members of society.

The Uechi-Ryu Butokukai Association

Our Association is called the Uechi-Ryu Butokukai. Founded by Sensei Durkin in 1984, the Uechi-Ryu Butokukai consists of the parent dojo (Atkinson, NH) and those dojos whose founders are students of Sensei Durkin.

The work “Butokukai” is derivative of the traditional name given the parent dojo (“Butokukan”) by our seniors in Okinawa. “Bu” (martial) “toku” (virtue) “kai” (gathering). Uechi-Ryu Butokukai: Gathering of students who are practicing the virtues of martial arts. The Uechi-Ryu Butokukai is an association of independently owned Uechi karate schools dedicated to the growth of high quality Uechi karate. The mission of each school within the association is to make its students more successful in life through the practice of Uechi style karate. The Association consists of 13 schools and over 2000 practicing students.

Introduction to Karate

Karate

Karate is an empty handed system of self defense that originated in China and dates back hundreds of years. Today, karate teaches mental as well as physical discipline. Uechi-Ryu (pronounced “way-chee roo”) Karate Do, a traditional Okinawan style of karate, is practiced here at the school.

Our Style – Uechi-Ryu Karate Do

Uechi-Ryu Karate encompasses all aspects of the martial arts. The purpose of studying Uechi-Ryu is to develop the karate student into a healthy, well coordinated person, both physically and mentally, and to train them so that they may master the weaponless defensive art. Uechi-Ryu was brought to the United States from Okinawa in 1958 by Mr. Durkin’s instructor, Sensei George Mattson, who is a 9th degree black belt.

Student Creed

This pledge stresses the philosophies and disciplines of our school. Students should learn this as soon as possible.

Remembering that the martial arts begin and end with respect, I intend to:

  1. Develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that would reduce my mental health or physical health.
  2. Develop self-discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others.
  3. Use what I learn in class constructively and defensively, to help myself and my fellow man and never to be abusive or offensive.
